NGC2174 is an emission nebula located about 6400 light-years away in the constellation Orion, just southwest of the star Propus, and is associated with the open star cluster NGC 2175. In this photo, north is to the right, and Propus is located toward the upper-right, about 2° distant. This image was exposed through filters having extremely narrow bandwidths to capture only the light emitted by certain gasses when excited by stellar radiation. This image uses the same color palette as the Hubble Space Telescope. Ionized sulfur is red, hydrogen is green, and oxygen is blue. |
